RE - God's goodness all over the world

In the book of Isaiah, we find out what some of God’s messengers had to say. God’s messengers were alive before Jesus was born and said wise things to the people of that time about God and what was going to happen

How do we praise God?

How do you think the people felt when they heard what Isaiah had to say?

RE - Give Thanks to God for neighbours everywhere

Ask your home teacher to take you outside to do this activity .

Stand in a space. Close your eyes.  Think about yourself in your space.

What can you hear?

Now open your eyes and look around you. What do you see?

What do you see above you?

If you were here tonight, what would you see above you? What are you standing on?

Look around you.

Look at the people who share this space with you.

You are a neighbour to each one.

There is only one sun, one sky, one world

We share all these with one another.

 A Story

One morning, King David woke up very early. Everything was bright and beautiful. Even though he could not see it, he knew the sun had risen in the sky. David was a good king. He often thought about the people that he was a neighbour to, all the people who lived in his land.

He thought about them looking up at the same sky, seeing the same sun, feeling the same light and warmth as himself. “How wonderful God is!” he thought. He knew the golden sun spread the message of God’s love for neighbours all over the world. He wanted his people to know this too so he wrote this psalm.

The sky above tells how wonderful God is. Every day it is there for us to see.

Every morning the golden sun appears shining on everyone, bringing light and warmth to all.

Spreading the message of God’s love all over the world

to neighbours here, neighbours there, neighbours everywhere.

(based on Psalm 18:1−5)

 Questions

How does the sky tell us how wonderful God is?

Why does looking at the sky help us to think about neighbours everywhere?

We have friends and neighbours throughout the world. They are called our global neighbours/friends. Why do you think people in our own and other countries all our neighbours?

How do we show God’s love to our neighbours?

Activity - Make  a sky at night collage on black paper using silver and gold squares of paper for the stars and moon OR ,make a sky during the day collage on blue paper using gold/yellow squares of paper for the sun and white/grey for the clouds.  Choose the appropriate line from the psalm to stick next to the collage.

RE - Universal Church -The World

For many people, some places in the world are special. For others the whole world is special. We all feel a need to look after what is special to us. Sometimes it is easy to explain why things are special. At other times it might be difficult to put into words why something is special.

  •  What are your special places and why?
  •  Can you recall an occasion when you were hurt or angry by the way your special place was treated by others? Why were you hurt or angry? What did you do?
  •  Do you know any groups who campaign because of the way people or our world are being treated today?

You  might have some questions of your own or you  might want to think about the following:

Making choices that help you  feel happy.

Making choices that made you  feel unhappy.

What helps you  to make good choices.

How the world would be if everyone followed Jesus’ new rule to ‘love one another’.

Activity - Friendship bracelet

Using card/paper and colouring pens or pencils, make a friendship bracelet with the words 'love one another' written on it somewhere. Look at these examples but I'm sure yours will be even better.

RE - We are happy when we love one another

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/re_18th_june.jpg

When we are living out Jesus’ new rule to ‘love one another’ this is shown in our thoughts and actions. What else could we say and do to show that we are living out the new rule? It is good to make up when we don’t keep this rule and try not to let it happen again.

What do you think is happening in this picture?

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/re_18th_june_2.jpg

During Mass, after the Our Father, the church family  share a sign of peace with one another .  They can shake hands and say, ‘Peace be with you’.  In this way, they are living out Jesus’ new rule by showing they want to be friends with one another.

Try to answer some of these questions with your home teacher.

How did Jesus show his love for all the people he met?

What would happen if we all kept Jesus’ new rule - what would the world be like?

How do you think the world would be a happier place?

How can we try to be more like Jesus?

What rules could we have for ourselves that would make others happy?

Activity  - Draw an outline of your hand and  inside the outline, write some ways that we can live out Jesus’ new rules .

 RE- Saying Sorry

Sometimes we quarrel with each other and have arguments. It is important to say sorry and to forgive others when they say sorry to us.  God always forgives us when we are sorry.

Here is a suggestion for a sorry prayer which focuses on God’s love.

God, our Father, thank you for loving me.

I am sorry for the times I have not shown love to others.

Help me always to live like Jesus.

Amen.

Click here to listen to this song by John Burland - I'm Sorry

Look at the picture below and with your home teacher, try and answer some of the questions.

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/churchs_story_2_-_pg_45__1_.jpg

  • What do you see in the picture?
  • What do you think has happened?
  • What are the children saying to each other?
  • How do you think the children are feeling?
  • Why is it sometimes hard to say sorry?
  • Who might help you?

Activity - Write your own sorry prayer and draw some pictures to illustrate it,  or use the suggested  sorry prayer and illustrate that.

 RE -

Think  back to our RE learning on Monday and how God is willing to help us when we need help.  Today our learning  focuses on the fact that we need forgiveness.  When we need help, God answers, ‘Here I am’.

Look at the picture below and focus on the words 'forgive' and 'sorry'. Think about what these words mean to you and talk to your home teacher about your understanding of these words.

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/churchs_story_2_-_pg_44.pdf

The words 'sorry' and 'forgive' are more than just words – we need to mean what we say.  It may take a little time before we understand that what we have done has made others and ourselves unhappy.

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/churchs_story_2_-_pg_46-47.pdf

It is a  good idea, at the end of the day, to stop and think about what has happened during the day.  Look at this picture and with your home teacher talk about what might have happened. Choose some of these questions to help you.

  •  What are the children thinking about?
  •  Who is thinking about a happy time and who is thinking of a wrong choice?
  •  Who should the children say sorry to? (Look at the picture for clues.)
  •  Why is bedtime a good time to think about what has happened during the day?
  •  What do you think we should say to God about the happy times we have had?
  •  What should we say about the unhappy times?
  •  Can you think of a prayer the children might say?

Activity - On a plain sheet of A4 paper, draw a thought bubble . On one side write the word 'sorry' and on the other side write  'thank you'.  Carefully cut out the shape and tonight when you go to bed, place the thought bubble under your pillow.  Think about the good things that have happened  during the day and say, ‘Thank you!’ to God for them. Then  think about the wrong choices you have made and say ‘Sorry!’

Think about the stories of Levi and Zacchaeus.  Do you think they found it easy to change their ways and to be sorry?  It is not easy to do this by ourselves, but God is there to help us, just as Jesus helped Levi and Zacchaeus.

Ask your home teacher to help you read the text below based on Isaiah 58: 9-11.

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/gods_story_2_-_pg_48-49.pdf

Isaiah wrote about God’s forgiveness, even before Jesus came to earth.  He made it clear what good choices we need to make to be kind and to make ourselves and others happy.

See if you can answer some of these questions.

  •  What is God’s promise?
  •  How do you think people feel when they hear Isaiah’s words?
  •  What kind things does Isaiah suggest that we do?
  •  Can you think of any other kind things to do?
  •  What would the world be like if everyone followed Isaiah’s advice?

Activity: Choose one of the ideas from the scripture and make a promise card. You can use words and pictures to help you. For example : Be ready to make friends - you could write a speech bubble saying something kind to someone who is new to the school and draw a picture of yourself and that person. Your promise card might have the heading I promise to be a friend to those who need a friend.

It would be really good to see your cards . Don't forget you can send them by email.

 RE - Zaccheus

Jesus met a chief tax collector, called Zacchaeus. Ask your home teacher to read this story of Zaccheus to you.

View document gods_story_2_-_pg_71.pdf

View document covid_19_home_learning/year_1/zaccheus.jpg

What wrong choices did Zacchaeus make?

  •  Why do you think he wanted to see Jesus?
  •  How did Zacchaeus feel when Jesus told him that he was coming to his house?
  •  Why did the people complain?
  •  How did Zacchaeus show he was sorry for his wrong choices?
  •  Why was it a happy day for Zacchaeus?

The story of Zaccheus is similar to the story of  Levi because they both made wrong choices but  they showed that they were sorry in different ways. When we make wrong choices like Zacchaeus did, we need to show that we are sorry in some way.

Activity

Tell the story in 3 pictures and write some sentences for each picture;  or write some speech bubbles for what  Zaccheus and Jesus might have said to each other.

 History -  The Seaside

Look at these pictures of the seaside past and present.  What can you see? What things have stayed the same? What things can you see that are different? Look at the last picture.

Does it look like a seaside that you have visited? What do you like to do when you are at the seaside? Can you see anyone doing some of the things you like to do in the pictures?

 RE

Jesus was gathering a group of people to help him spread the Good News.  He chose people who would follow him faithfully and would be sorry for when they made wrong choices.  Levi the tax collector was one of those people.

 Questions

  What was Levi’s job?

  •  What wrong choice did he make?
  •  What was Levi’s answer to Jesus’ invitation to follow him?
  •  What invitation did Levi give to Jesus?
  •  How do you think Levi changed?

Activity

Levi was sorry for what he had done. Think about what he might have said to Jesus and write a prayer from Levi to Jesus.
