TUESDAY 14TH JULY

LIFE SIZE DRAWINGS

Stick a load of A4 sheets of paper together (or if you have a big paper roll even better!) and place it on the floor. Encourage the kids to lie down on it and outline their body with a pen. From this moment on there is no way to stop the kids getting creative: colour in, add accessories to the figures like stickers or stamps, design clothes with old material offcuts or other things you might find in the art drawer. Design a football kit or a prom outfit.  The kids will have lots of fun with the real-size copies and you may have something really special to decorate  their bedroom wall afterwards.  Don't forget to send photos of your drawings in to admin@stmary (full address above)

Tongue-twisters are phrases that are designed to be challenging to say.  Kids are encouraged to repeat each saying as many times as possible, as quickly as possible, without making a mistake.  But enjoy the slip-ups… Tongue twisters are meant to be fun for the whole family!

Try these with your kids!

  • A cheap ship trip.
  • I can think of six thin things and of six thick things too.
  • Sam’s shop stocks short spotted socks.
  • Fat frogs flying past fast.
  • Red leather, yellow leather.
  • Selfish shellfish.
  • Shredded Swiss cheese.
  • The crow flew over the river with a lump of raw liver.

RE-Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.

Illness and suffering are not easy to cope with. They make a person feel powerless and realise their limitations.  When a person is very sick, they are not able to do what they normally do.  They may not be able to work or to enjoy life as they used to. Often it is an occasion when people have time to reflect on what is important to them in life. It is often a time when people think about God and pray more. Christians remember the suffering of Jesus.  When Jesus sent out his disciples to preach the Good News they;

“…anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.”

 Mark 6: 13

Recall how the Good Samaritan anointed the wounds of the man who had been mugged and used oil to clean and heal them.  The person who is very ill welcomes the prayers and kindness of those who visit them. James’ letter has many practical suggestions which include reference to anointing of the sick.

“Are any of you ill?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ”Based on James 5: 14-15

The anointing with oil is a symbol of healing and is used in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for anyone who is seriously ill. It is a sacrament that is commonly given a number of times during an illness, sometimes because the person becomes more ill, or because the sick person would benefit from the strength and comfort the Sacrament gives them. The Sacrament of Anointing ‘is meant to lead the person to healing of the soul but also of the body if such is God’s will.’ (Catechism Catholic Church 1520)Through the Sacrament the Holy Spirit helps to calm the worry, anxiety and discouragement the sick person may experience.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  • Q Why do you think oil is used in healing?
  • Q What other sacraments include anointing with oil? (there are three others Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders.)
  • Q How do you think the sick person feels when they know someone is praying for them?
  • Q What do you think James means when he says:‘ the Lord will raise him up’?

MAIN TASK

Using the scripture from James’ letter, explain how you think they would encourage and give hope to a sick person. Give reasons for your choices using other scripture readings if you can.

RE-Caring for those in need; a Christian responsibility.

Christians are called to care for others, especially for those most in need. Jesus explains this very clearly in a parable he told. A parable is a story which conveys an important meaning or more than one meaning. In this story from Luke’s Gospel, a lawyer was trying to catch Jesus out with questions. The final one was, ‘Who is my neighbour?’  Jesus answers this with a story, but the story also has another meaning. It shows the care and compassion with which we should treat each other. Notice the care and concern the Samaritan showed to the man who had been mugged.

A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half-dead.  Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.  So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.  He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them.  Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.  The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.”

“Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”  He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Based on Luke 10: 30-37

MAIN TASK

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  • Q Why do you think the Samaritan acted as he did?
  • Q How do you think the man who was mugged felt?
  • Q What showed that the Samaritan was doing more than his mere duty towards another person?
  • Q What does this parable have to say to us today?
  • Q What do you think ‘mercy’ means?
  • Q Good deeds are often called ‘acts of mercy’. Why do you think that is?
  • Q Why are these acts of mercy a particular responsibility for the Christian?

RE - Jesus cares for the sick.

From the very beginning of Jesus’ ministry, he was concerned with the sick and needy. He never turned anyone away even when he was tired and weary. In Jesus’ day, there were many sick people and they often had to survive by begging at the roadside.  .This story from Luke illustrates Jesus’ compassion:

As Jesus was coming near Jericho, there was a blind man sitting by the road, begging. When he heard the crowd passing by, he asked, “What is this?”

“Jesus of Nazareth is passing by”, they told him.

He cried out, “Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!” The people in front scolded him and told him to be quiet.  But he shouted even more loudly, “Son of David! Have mercy on me!”

So Jesus stopped and ordered the blind man to be brought to him.  When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?”

“Sir”, he answered, “I want to see again.”  Jesus said to him, “Then see! Your faith has made you well.”   At once he was able to see, and he followed Jesus, giving thanks to God. When the crowd saw it, they all praised God.

Luke 18: 35-43

RE - God is loving and merciful.

Sometimes we can misuse the freedom we have and use it irresponsibly. We forget to love God and our neighbour. It may not be by something that we do, but by something that we omit to do.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’.

Edmund Burke 1729-1797

Amos was a prophet who lived long before Jesus and challenged the people to care for the poor and those in need. Prophets reminded them of God’s love and of the kind of people they were called to be.

At times when we do not follow these instructions, we need reconciliation and forgiveness from God. We know that God is loving and merciful and that He will always forgive us. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation we celebrate God’s love and mercy. We learn about the joys and challenges of living as a follower of Jesus in love and peace. During the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation the Church celebrates the love and mercy of God. It calls people to confess their sins, ask for forgiveness and be reconciled to God and to one another.

O my God, because you are so good,

I am very sorry that I have sinned against you

and with the help of your grace I will not sin again.  Amen.

Always aim to do what is good and avoid what is evil, so that you will live as God’s people;

and when you say that your God is with you, it really will be true.

Hate what is wrong; love what is right.

Make sure that justice is done for everyone, so that your God will show mercy to you.

Amos 5 14-15

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  • Q In which ways can we do wrong by doing nothing, as Edmund Burke comments?
  • Q Compare this with the reading from Amos; how does he tell us to live?
  • Q In the Act of Contrition what promise are we making to God?
  • Q Why is it sometimes difficult to keep this promise?
  • Q What should we do if we break this promise?
 MAIN TASK

Write your own Act of Contrition including the words: God is loving and merciful.

When he saw the crowds Jesus went up the mountain and sat down. His disciples gathered round him and this is what he taught them. You will be blessed when you have an open and generous heart. When you share what you have with other people God will be very close to you. You will be blessed when you reach out to those who grieve. When you make friends with those who are sad and lonely, God will be there to comfort you. You will be blessed when you are gentle. When you treat others with kindness and patience God will give you all you need. You will be blessed when you work for justice. When you respect and stand up for the rights of others, God will give you life to the full. You will be blessed when you forgive others and don’t hold grudges. You will find God ready to forgive you. You will be blessed when you desire what is good. When you always search for what is good, you will find God in all around you. You will be blessed when you are a peacemaker. When you try not to let a quarrel even begin or are first to say sorry you will be known as children of God. You will be blessed when you are made fun of for doing what God wants. When people laugh at you for living in God’s way, know that you are very close to God. Remember what happened to so many of God’s messengers. Rejoice and be glad

RE - Using freedom for good

God"s People (based on Isaiah 58:3-8)

God says: Be clear about what is right and what pleases me! Giving up things and putting on a miserable face does not impress me. What brings me joy is everything that brings freedom: a kindly word for someone who is worried; a helping hand for someone in trouble. When people share food with the hungry and help the homeless find shelter; if they give clothes to those in need and work at bringing happiness to their family and friends, I see my love growing in them. This is what pleases me, and they will become signs of hope for everyone, like a bright sunrise after a long dark night.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  • Q What behaviour mentioned by Isaiah does not impress God?
  • Q What are some of the positive things God wants us to do?
  • Q How does Isaiah’s advice link with the Ten Commandments?
  • Q Can we keep the rules that God gives us and why?
  • Q Why has Isaiah used the idea of sunrise in the last line? What do you think it means

RE - The Greatest Commandment

What does God want? (based on Mark 12:28-31)

The chief priests and scribes heard about the work and teaching of Jesus. They tried to find some way of getting rid of him, but they were afraid because the people followed him. So they sent some Pharisees and scribes to ask him questions and try to catch him out. One of the scribes asked him, “What commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus replied, “The most important one is this, ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength’. The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’. There is no other commandment more important than these two.”

  • Q Why do you think the Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus what commandment is the most important of all?
  • Q What do you think it means to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength?
  • Q What has Jesus added to the Shema and what difference does that make?
  • Q How do we love our neighbours as we love ourselves?
  • Q How do we love and care for ourselves well?
  • Q How do these two commandments given by Jesus sum up all the Ten Commandments?
  • Q How do you think these two commandments give you freedom and what is the responsibility?
  • MAIN TASK
  • Write a prayer or a poem asking God to help you to love yourself or a neighbour more fully.

RE - The Ten Commandments

The story of the Ten Commandments is found in the Book of Exodus 20: 1-17 and in the Book of Deuteronomy 5: 1-21 Moses reminds the people again about them.  Christians share these Commandments with Jewish people.  This list is from the Book of Exodus; God spoke, and these were his words:

“I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, where you were slaves.”

  • Worship no god but me. Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth. Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, because I am the Lord your God.

  • Do not use my name for evil purposes.

  • Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. You have six days in which to do your work, but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to me. On that day no one is to work –neither you, your children, your slaves, your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your country. In six days I, the Lord, made the earth, the sky, the seas, and everything in them, but on the seventh day I rested. That is why I, the Lord, blessed the Sabbath and made it holy.

  • Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.

  • Do not kill.

  • Do not be unfaithful.

  • Do not steal.

  • Do not lie against your neighbour.

  • Do not be greedy and want what other people own.

  • Do not take another’s husband or wife

    Based on Exodus 20 1-17

Under the heading ‘God’s Guide to Freedom and Responsibility’ write a guide to help  a younger child to understand  the commandments.   Allow half a page for each commandment. Include ways in which children can keep this commandment; what they do, say and feel; how it helps people live together freely. Write an introductory paragraph to say why people choose to live by these commandments and how belief in them can shape the lives of Christians.

RE - The Ten Commandments

People who want to live or work together make rules for themselves. The rules give them freedom to live as they wish, but at the same time, be responsible for the happiness of the whole group.

This story is found in the Book of Exodus, which is the story of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The book of Exodus is one of the five books which make up the Jewish Torah or law. (Recall Year 4 Judaism) Display the map from God’s Story 3 page 17 or aerial view or other images (e.g. page 26) to show the terrain around Mount Sinai.

After Moses led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, they wandered in the desert for many years. They were glad they were free, but it was hard going at times.  Sometimes they were hungry and thirsty, then they began to grumble. But God provided for them, in spite of their grumbles and they knew that God was with them leading and guiding them.

As they made their way through the desert they lived together as a community learning to care for each other’s needs, but above all learning to know and worship the God who had saved them. When they reached a very high mountain called Mount Sinai, Moses ordered the people to camp at the foot of it and not to climb its slopes, because it is God’s mountain.Moses himself began to climb and asked the people to pray that God would teach them the laws which would bring them together as a people. Moses stayed on the mountain for a very long time, praying and talking with God. Then he returned to God’s people and gave them God’s Laws: The Ten Commandments. These were to help the people to live in freedom and to be responsible for their actions.

Write a diary entry as an Israelite complaining about the situation you found yourself in. Explain why you would be willing to accept God’s Laws from Moses.
