RE - RECEPTION FOCUS: Pentecost: The celebration of the Good News of Jesus.

Pentecost is often named as the ‘birthday of the Church’.   The feast celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples.  The Holy Spirit is a new friend that Jesus had promised to send them.  With a new friend the disciples felt full of joy and happiness.   They were no longer frightened and were able to go out and share the Good News with others.

Talk about people going to church to celebrate the Good News of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  The people in the picture are coming together to share their happiness and joy because they are celebrating the Good News of Jesus who kept his promise and sent the Holy Spirit to be our friend.  We can all share in this happiness.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  • Q What do you see in the picture?
  • Q Why are the people celebrating?
  • Q How are the people celebrating?
  • Q How would you celebrate the Good News of Jesus?

Let’s celebrate by singing ‘If you are happy and you know it clap your hands.

Suggested verse:

Jesus sent a friend clap your hands…

It’s Pentecost you know, so your happiness can show,

Jesus sent a friend clap your hands…

Tuesday 28th April

Hello Reception, it has been great to speak to Mums, Dads, and yourselves in the last couple of days. Well done for all your hard work so far and thank you to all the grown ups helping at home, keep going! I look forward to seeing some photos of what you've being doing at home, so please email them in.

Literacy - I hope you enjoyed the story of The Three Little Pigs.

If you didn't get time to draw a story sequence yesterday, see below for an example -

Now listen to the story again on Busy Things and complete the Sequencing activity. Once you have done this I would like you to write as many words as you can think of that rhyme with the word pig (at least 5). Listen to the sounds carefully and write them in the right order, in your Home Learning Book. Also remember to write the letters carefully, see below for correct letter formation.

Now complete the Word Family activities on Literacy Planet.

Maths - Complete the More or Fewer calculation activity on Busy Things Review the maths words from yesterday; more, bigger number, add, altogether, total, amount, count. Then you can write the number sentence to match the number stories below. Write the whole number sentence in your Home Learning Book, eg 1 + 1 = 2.

RE - The coming of the Holy Spirit

Recall the Good News of Easter for the friends of Jesus.  God his Father gave Jesus new life on Easter Sunday.  ‘Alleluia’ is the Church’s special Easter word meaning ‘Praise God’.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK:

  • Q How did the friends of Jesus feel after he went back to his Father?
  • Q Have you ever felt like that? When?
  • Q What did the friends of Jesus do?
  • Q What happened on Pentecost day?
  • Q How did the friends of Jesus feel?
  • Q What did the friends of Jesus do after the coming of the Holy Spirit

Teaching Point - It is difficult at this age for children to understand the abstract concept of the Holy Spirit. We use images such as air and wind to help us explain the power of the Holy Spirit.  The effects of these elements are what we want the children to explore and thereby deepen their understanding.

Activities -

  • † Retell the Pentecost story and ask the children to use facial expressions and actions to show how the friends of Jesus’ feelings changed as the story progresses.
  • Finish by singing this song and thanking God for the Good News of Easter, click on the link - I've got the joy, joy, joy down in my heart Youtube song
